Here are some tips to consider, to help keep yourself and your family safe:
- Move the furniture and make the surrounding unfamiliar to the abuser.
- Use different lighting. If you used overhead lights, use lamps and timer switches.
- Change your locks and usual point of entry into your home.
- Get a Dog. Small breeds can be very vocal.
- Move your bedroom to another room.
- Keep cans of hairspray handy in each room so that you can spray your attacker and give yourself time to get away.
- Practice "Fire Drills" with your children and make them understand that "Fire" (or any word that you may choose to use) means for them to GET OUT IMMEDIATELY.
- Install motion detector lighting outside your home.
- Alert the neighbors to the vehicle your abuser may own and that they should call 911 should they see your abuser.
- Vary your routine. Shop at different stores. ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings and keep pepper spray in your hand.
